Turnbacks and Late Arrivals
While the large majority of our members provide accurate information and arrive on time for games (30 minutes before game time), there has been a large increase in the past few months in the number of people turning back games and being late for assigned games. These late changes have significantly increased the Assignor’s (Mike Willmott) workload and have led to delays in scheduling the following week’s games, ultimately impacting all of us. To address this in accordance with the Association by-laws, the South Coast Referee Association Board of Directors has approved the following:
Turnbacks - Once games are assigned in accordance with a member’s provided availability and members are notified of game assignments, games turned back will result in the sanctions detailed below. In all cases, if there are extenuating circumstances for the turnback, you must notify the association in advance. Waivers would apply for extenuating circumstances such as a medical situation or family emergency.
First turnback – The first instance of a turnback in a calendar year will result in a written warning and your calendar will be blocked to the end of the calendar year. In order to get future game assignments, you must log on to Arbiter and unblock only the dates that you will definitely be available. If you are unsure whether you will be available or not for a particular date, please keep that date block.
Second turnback – The second instance of a turnback will result in a $10.00[1] penalty and your calendar will be blocked to the end of the calendar year. In order to get future game assignments, you must log on to Arbiter and unblock only the dates that you will definitely be available. If you are unsure whether you will be available or not for a particular date, please keep that date block.
Third turnback – The third instance of a turnback will result in another $10.001 penalty and the association will place a permanent block on your calendar which you will not be able to unblock. To continue to be assigned games from SCRA, you must attend a mandatory hearing in front of the SCRA board. The SCRA board will then make a decision to determine your future ability to be assigned SCRA games. Failure to attend a hearing will keep your calendar blocked permanently.
Late Arrival Fees – If a phone call is made to the Assignor less than 20 minutes prior to game time asking the Assignor to track down a missing referee or to arrange for a backup or replacement, a $10 coordination/replacement fee will be assessed to the member. To avoid the fee, get to the field on-time and make sure you have the contact information for the other members of your referee team and the Assignor, so you can notify them of any last-minute delays. Please note that all members have their Home and Cell phones listed on the SCRA Accounting website under “Member List” and are expected to keep the information up to date. You can also print out a schedule from the CSL Referee Management System website (click on schedule and then display referee team) that has the contact information for the referee team.
The above policy is effective upon issuance.
[1] The assessment applies to a group of games on the same day. For example, 3 games (back to back) assigned and then turned back would result in an assessment of $10.
