As we get closer to the start of the “olders” cup season, let’s talk about a few things that I feel need to be discussed………..
- FORGET THE HIGH SCHOOL SEASON !! IT’S OVER…. FOCUS ON USSF LAWS AND PHILOSOPHY…….. ANY QUESTIONS ?????????????
- All the feedback I have received thus far is that SCRA has been well represented during State Cup for the young ‘uns and I would expect the more mature referees to do the same. That means, make sure your uniforms are in good shape, especially after the high school season, and that you can keep up with the U16-19 crowd. If you can’t, there is nothing wrong with telling the Assignor, so that he may make appropriate assignments before any embarrassing situations develop.
- Read the Law Book. Again. There are several differences from the high school environment and they need to be understood so that the appropriate restart, substitutions, and other administratia can be handled correctly.
- For example, can you allow substitutes prior to an IFK being taken? When the referee stops play and a team is in clear possession, what is the restart? Does USSF have a ‘soft red”?
- Focus on doing games well at this level so that you are in a position to upgrade.
- Stick around for other games and glean pointers from other referees on how to manage the game, control your own emotions during stressful times, and to appear to have fun.
- GET TO THE GAMES ON TIME…………………………………………….. Plan for the flat tire enroute.
And finally (but not the least), have fun …………………………………………..
See you on the pitch!
